What's on the test

About two hours, three parts, one sitting. PTE Core uses everyday English, the kind you hear at work, at the bank or from a landlord. Our mock tests run in the same order.

Part 1 ~50 min

Speaking & Writing

The longest part. You speak into a headset and type short written responses.

  • Personal Introduction Not scored
  • Read Aloud
  • Repeat Sentence
  • Describe Image
  • Respond to a Situation Core only
  • Answer Short Question
  • Summarize Written Text
  • Write Email Core only
Part 2 ~30 min

Reading

Short everyday texts and one timer for the whole part, so you set your own pace.

  • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
  • Re-order Paragraphs
  • Reading: Fill in the Blanks
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer
Part 3 ~30 min

Listening

Each recording plays once. Taking quick notes helps a lot here.

  • Summarize Spoken Text
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
  • Fill in the Blanks
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer
  • Select Missing Word
  • Highlight Incorrect Words
  • Write from Dictation

Worth knowing: some tasks count towards two skills. Repeat Sentence is marked for Speaking and Listening, and Write from Dictation for Listening and Writing. So don't skip the short ones.

What's inside

Start with one mock test to see where you are. Then practise your weakest skill first, and take another mock when you feel ready. That's really all there is to it.

What score do you need?

IRCC asks for a CLB level, not a PTE score. Pick the CLB you need to see the PTE Core score for each skill.

  • CLB is counted skill by skill. One weak skill pulls your whole result down.
  • Speaking and Writing need higher scores than Reading for the same CLB.
The Toronto skyline and a Canadian flag across the water
Target CLB level
Listening60–70
Reading60–68
Speaking68–75
Writing69–78

CLB 7 in all four skills is the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program under Express Entry.

Score ranges follow IRCC's language test equivalency chart for PTE Core. Program rules change, so check the current requirements on the IRCC website before you apply.

Starting from a low band?

Tell us where you are, what you need and how much time you have each day. You'll see the points each skill needs and a rough timeframe. Going up one or two CLB levels with steady practice is common.

Rough time–

A rough estimate from typical progress at that practice level, not a promise of any score. Your first mock test gives your real starting level, and your roadmap updates from it.

How to prepare for PTE Core

PTE Core is the Pearson English test for Canadian immigration. Here is a simple plan that works for most people, whether you need CLB 7 for Express Entry or CLB 9 and above for more CRS points.

    1

Take a full PTE Core mock test

Start with one timed mock test in the real order: Speaking and Writing, then Reading, then Listening. Your four scores show your CLB level today and which skill is holding you back.

    2

    Practise your weakest question types

Spend most of your time on the tasks that cost you points, such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Respond to a Situation, Write an Email or Summarize Written Text. Short daily practice beats long weekend sessions.

    3

Use AI scoring to fix mistakes fast

Every answer is scored straight away, so you can see if fluency, pronunciation, grammar or vocabulary needs work, and try again the same day instead of waiting for a teacher.

    4

Re-test, then book the real exam

Take another PTE Core practice test every week or two. When your mock scores reach the CLB you need in all four skills, book your exam at a Pearson test centre. Want feedback from a person? Join a live class or find a mentor.

What is PTE Core and who is it for?

PTE Core is Pearson's computer-based test of general, everyday English. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts it as proof of English for economic immigration programs and for citizenship, so it is the PTE test to take if you are applying for Canadian permanent residence.

How is PTE Core different from PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is built for university admission and uses academic content. PTE Core uses real-life and workplace content, and swaps the academic tasks for practical ones: you write an email instead of an essay, and respond to an everyday situation instead of re-telling a lecture. Study permit applicants generally need PTE Academic, not PTE Core.

    How is the test scored?

Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing are each scored from 10 to 90 by Pearson's automated scoring system. IRCC then converts each skill score into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. Use the score finder above to see the ranges.

How long is the test and when do results arrive?

The test takes about two hours in a single sitting at a Pearson test centre. Results are typically available within two days. For immigration purposes, a language test result must be less than two years old when you apply.

How close are your mock tests to the real exam?

Our mock tests follow the three-part structure and timing of PTE Core and are scored automatically as soon as you submit. Mock scores show how ready you are, but they are our estimate, not an official Pearson result.

How do I pay, and when does my plan start?

Create an account, choose a plan and pay securely through Razorpay. Your plan is linked to your account once the payment goes through, and its validity is shown on each plan above.

Is PTE Core accepted for Express Entry and Canadian PR?

Yes. IRCC accepts PTE Core as proof of English for economic immigration programs, including the Express Entry programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades), and for Canadian citizenship.

What PTE Core score do I need for CLB 7?

For CLB 7 you need roughly 60–70 in Listening, 60–68 in Reading, 68–75 in Speaking and 69–78 in Writing. CLB is counted skill by skill, so each of the four scores has to reach its range. Pick another level in the score finder above to see its ranges.

Can I take a PTE Core mock test online?

Yes. Our full-length PTE Core mock tests run in your browser in the same order and timing as the real exam, with automatic scores for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing as soon as you finish. You can start with a free account.

How should I prepare for PTE Core in a few weeks?

Take one mock test first to find your weakest skill, then practise that question type every day. Speaking and Writing usually need the most work because they need higher scores for the same CLB. Take another mock test every week or two to track progress, and join a live class if you want feedback from a mentor.
